Do:
  • Move personal property to protected area.
  • Remove as much water possible with a wet vacuum or mop.
  • Wipe water from wood floors and surfaces.
  • Move furniture and pictures to a dry place.
  • Place plastic under furniture legs.
  • Open furniture and cupboard doors.
  • Turn on A/C in summer.
  • Prop up or remove wet furniture cushions.
  • Get air movement in wet area ASAP.
  • Remain out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Don't:
  • Do not use any power equipment or electronics while standing in water.
  • Do not leave items (dark colored) on wet carpet.
  • Do not use any light fixtures or electronics if wet or in high humidity.







Do:
  • Limit the movement in the home to prevent spreading and embedding soot.
  • Clean and protect chrome/brass fixtures with oil or petroleum jelly.
  • Vacuum loose soot from upholstery, carpets, and drapes.
  • Open windows to help air out property.
  • Wash plants with 50% water and 50% milk solution.
  • Change filter on furnace (if operational).
  • Empty refrigerator or freezer (if electricity is out) and prop open doors.
  • Turn off water and drain all pipes, toilets, and water heater in cold weather.
  • Pour antifreeze down sinks, tubs, drains, and toilets.
  • Drain boiler system (if electricity is out).

Don't:
  • Do not stay in house for an extended period.
  • Do not attempt to clean walls or ceilings.
  • Do not use upholstered furniture.
  • Do not eat any food that has been exposed to smoke or high heat.
  • Do not use electronics until they have been professionally examined.
  • Do not use dishes, glasses, or silver wear until cleaned.
